A study on the types of cohesion found in English translation of Surah Al-Furqon by M. Marmaduke Pickthall

ABSTRACT

Language is very important means for communication. We are difficult to understand and communicate with each other without language. There are many countries in this world that have different language. But English is as an international language that is often used in every international event. As international language, English is the most widespread medium of communication with other people around the world. All of people attempt to communicate and understand this language. English is used to communicate with people from other countries, or to able to read and understand everything about the texts (discourse).

Discourse analysis is also a general term for a number of approaches analyzing written, spoken and signed language use. One of the substances of discourse is cohesion. Its analysis emphasize on grammar. Cohesion is one of the criteria making a sequence of sentence constitutes as a text. Based on those points and her interest in discourse, the researcher attempted to analyze cohesion in English translation of surah Al-Furqon by M. Marmaduke Pickthall.

The problems to be studied in this research are: What are the types of cohesion found in English translation of surah Al-Furqon by M. Marmaduke Pickthall? And What are the functions of cohesion found in English translation of surah Al-Furqon by M. Marmaduke Pickthall?

To conduct this research the researcher used some theories related to answer the problems, those are various theoretical discourse analysis. Methodologically, she used descriptive qualitative method, because the data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences. To analyze the data the researcher takes the data which consist of cohesion that are used in the English translation of surah Al-Furqon by M. Marmaduke Picthall , and explain the function of cohesion in this surah.

The result of this research shows that English translation of surah Al-Furqon by M. Marmaduke Pickthall used aspect of cohesion. They are substitution, ellipsis, reference, conjunction and lexical cohesion. and each kind of cohesion has different function.

Finally, the researcher hopes her thesis will be useful and it can be increase the knowledge of the students who are interested in discourse analysis, especially cohesion, and she suggest that the readers make deeper analysis by using this thesis as the reference.
