Abstract
ABSTRACT
Literature is a mirror of society and will be characterized by human imagination and ideas of their expression, good form, techniques, and our fantastic world. It can be applied from human of daily life. Psychology and literature have relationship as intimate. It means that psychology help to clarify some literary problems and literature presents insights to psychology. Furthermore, Psychological criticism is the application of psychoanalysis within literature. Psychological criticism also to explore the motivations of characters and the symbolic meanings of events, while biographers speculate about a writer's own motivations.
For along times, there are many works such as books, magazines, journal and especially literary work covered these issues, and this discourse come into seminar, conference, and other places discussed about woman discourse. One of them is the novel a Thousand Splendid Suns written by Khaled Hosseini, this is tried to reveal aggression, domestic violence, and frustration that happen in a family. Here, the author tries to make the readers concludes how the problems of family that is applied in cases of aggression, moreover, to identify aggression in a family. It makes domestic violence is happen. There is one of the factors why aggression is happen, that is Frustration-Aggression. Thus, this study is aimed to identify and to describe how aggression in domestic violence based on frustration-aggression. Furthermore, to achieve the problem of the study, the researcher uses psychological criticism as one method of this research. And, the researcher also uses frustration-aggression hypothesis to analyse this novel. Aggression is any form of behaviour directed toward the goal of harming or injuring another living being who is motivated to avoid such treatment, and frustration always leads to some form of aggression. Frustration is especially pronounced when one’s motivation to achieve a goal is very strong and the blocking is complete. And also, can raise strong motif to hurt the others. Moreover, the data of this research are collected from Khaled Khosseini’s a Thousand Splendid Suns. The researcher herself becomes the research instrument in the process of data collection and data analysis.
Based on the researcher’s analysis, aggression, domestic violence, and frustration reflected on the main character of Khaled Khosseini novel takes three main forms which have any derivation on each aspect. First, aggression is described into the cases of physical aggression and verbal; active aggression and passive aggression; direct and indirect aggression. Second, domestic violence is explored in six cases that are physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, intimidation, economic deprivation, and threats of violence. The last, frustration-aggression hypothesis is more shown in this novel, as the theory to analyse this research.
