Setting in William Gibson's Miracle Worker drama

ABSTRACT

Setting is one important thing in literature. Setting not only tell about time and place but also tell about characrers, and social inviromment.There are some reasons the writer choose this topic. Drama presents events in real life in which seeing a play is just like seeing ourselves in a mirror. So that, we can know and understand what it is talked about immediately. Because drama presents its action on stage, it is able powerfully to focus on the setting or background. This play is based on true story and bring William Gibson more popular that interested to be conducted, the writer also have performed it in her drama class, therefore at least she have a little information anything about it so that it could support the data. The problems of the study are what are the types and elements of the setting in William Gibson’s Miracle Worker drama? The objectives of the study are to answers the question of the study.

This study is categorized into literary criticism using inductive method also uses structuralism approach that analyzes about an intrinsic aspect because the writer analyzes, interprets and evaluates the setting in drama William Gibson’s Miracle Worker. The data source of the research is the Miracle Worker, a play that consists of three acts and has 120 pages. The types of the setting are neutral setting because it tell about certain place which doesn't give certain meaning and the readers easily know about what is written. The elements of the setting are illustrated that the detail of room's interior about Keller homestead, Perkins Institution for the blind in Boston and the garden house. About the occupation and models of day-to-day existence of the characters are; Annie is pupil in Perkins Institution of blind pupil then she is sent to teach Helen who is blind and deaf. Helen as main character always disturbed others. Kate as Helen's mother cared and loved the Keller's family.

Social environment about the characters are high social class; it is showed from the words “Doctor and Captain Arthur”. Also because Keller had many servants. Impossible at the time had a servant if he isn't rich man. The moral of Kate Keller is caring person, she love her baby much by has been through a long vigil and she is bent lovingly over the crib and her finger playful with the baby’s face, Kate comes to Helen, embraces, caresses, soothes her, and buries her own face in her hair. Helen was smart girl, event she couldn't see and hear, but she could imitate what Annie spelled in her palm correctly. Annie is discipline women, she wants change the bad daily activities of Helen and she never gave up although at the first time Helen made her mad.

Setting salah satu hal penting dalam dunia sastra. Setting tidak hanya membahas tentang tempat dan waktu tetapi juga tentang perwatakan dan kehidupan sosial si pelaku. Ada beberapa alasan penulis memilih topik ini. Drama mementaskan suatu peristiwa persis seperti dalam dunia nyata, sehingga menonton darama seperti melihat kehidupan kita sendiri. Maka dari itu, kita bisa langsung mengetahui dan memahami apa yang di ceritakan. Sebagai penonton kita harus fokus pada setting agar bisa memahami jalan ceritanya. Miracle worker ditulis berdasarkan cerita nyata yang membuat Gibson makin terkenal, di samping itu penulis juga pernah mementaskannya dalam mata kuliah drama, diharapkan dapat menambah informasi dalam data. Masalah yang akan dibahas adalah Apa type dan elemen yang terdapat dalam cerita ini? Tujuan pembahasannya untuk menjawab masalah tersebut.

Penelitian ini dikategorikan ke dalam kritik sastra menggunakan metode induktif pendekatan strukturalis yaitu mengkaji sastra hanya unsur intrinsik saja (setting). Data utamanya adalah novel Miracle Worker yang terdiri dari 3 bab besar dalam 120 halaman. Selanjutnya diketahui bahwa type setting yang terdapat dalam novel ini adalah neutral setting karena setting yang digunakan adalah tempat yang sesungguhnya dan tidak mengandung makna lain sehingga pembaca dapat langsung memahami.

Sedangkan elemen settingnya membahas secara detail ruangan beserta interiornya di kediaman Keller, Perkins Institution di Boston dan garden house. Ditemukan pula keseharian pelaku yaitu Annie yang dulunya murid di sekolah untuk orang-orang buta dan tuli setelah dewasa dikirim untuk mengajar Helen yang juga buta, tuli dan bisu. Dia adalah orang yang disiplin yang ingin mengubah kebiasaan buruk Helen dan tidak mudah putus asa meskipun pada awalnya Helen membuat dia marah. Helen sebagai pelaku utama selalu mengganggu orang lain.Dia adalah gadis yang cerdas. Meskipun buta, tuli dan bisu tapi dia bisa menirukan apa yang Annie ajarkan melalui tangannya. Kate (ibunya Helen) sangat sayang dan peduli kepada Helen. Kehidupan sosial para pelaku juga ditemukan. Mereka termasuk strata kelas atas.
