Abstract
ABSTRACT
Feminism is one of the most common issues discussed by everyone around the world. Actually, feminism is a response to the women who have been oppressed and unjustly treated. Most of women realize that they were placed in the second level and discriminated in any aspects of life. Therefore, in the name of women emancipation, there are many scientific discipliner applied in back up these phenomena. Also, there are some approaches in literary criticism applied to cover and analyze these phenomena.
For along times, there are many works such as books, magazines, journal and especially literary work covered these issues, and this discourse come into seminar, conference, and other places discussed about woman discourse. One of them is the novel Ann Veronica written by H.G. Well, this is tried to reveal the violence, oppression and struggle by presenting the woman problems. Here, the author tries to make the readers concludes how woman always in second class, inferior, full of weakness, exploited, marginalized and to be the object of violence.
Thus, this study is aimed to find what the kinds of woman problem covered on the novel such as violence, oppression, and struggle of woman that happened to the main character. Then, to achieve the problem of the study, the researcher use feminist literary criticism as one method of this research. Moreover, the data of this research are collected from H.G. Well’ Ann Veronica. The researcher himself becomes the research instrument in the process of data collection and data analysis.
Based on the researcher’s analysis, the violence, oppression and struggle reflected on the main character of Ann Veronica novel takes three main forms which have any derivation on each aspect. First, Violence which is divided into two parts active and passive violence, each parts have physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and economical abuse, then, physical neglect, and emotional neglect for passive violence. Second, oppression just has one element that is social oppression in the form of culture and the last is woman struggle that to be the end of the novel purposed.
