Hesitations found in the students' speeches

ABSTRACT

Making error is natural characteristics of human beings given by God to His creature. It means that making error can not be avoided by every person in his or her life. People can make error in different ways. For example, we often find somebody making errors when they deliver a speech. The common disruption that sometimes we often found when people deliver a speech is hesitation.

This research was conducted due to the phenomena of hesitation that often happen when the speakers deliver a speech specifically when the language that they use is a foreign language. This research focuses on hesitation made by the speakers of the students of Pondok Pesantren Barokatu Zainil Hasanain Pajarakan Probolinggo. The research problems formulated what are kinds of hesitation and also what are the factors which influence hesitation in the speech presentation by the students of Pondok Pesantren Barokatu Zainil Hasanin Pajarakan Probolinggo.

This research is designed by using descriptive qualitative method. This research uses psycholinguistic approach to analyze the hesitation because it analyzes language related to the human mental especially regarding to the second language acquisition. The data were collected by observing the students speeches in weekly English program, then transcribing them from spoken into written. The data are analyzed by categorizing the data according to the types of hesitation, describing, discussing and interpreting the data. After that, the whole data are discussed and continued by making conclusion.

As the result, the researcher found many types of hesitation made by the students of Pondok Pesantren Barokatu Zainil Hasanain Pajarakan Probolinggo. They are; false start, restart, filled pause, unfilled pause and word lengthening. In the end, the result of the interview with the students, it can be stated that there are two factors that influence the speaker hesitates when they deliver a speech. The first factor come from internal speaker them self such as forget what would like to be said, and lack of preparation. And the second one is come from external factor such as the speaker delivers a speech in front of many audiences. Therefore, understanding the material well and also prepare our mental are the key success for us in delivering speech.
