Abstract
ABSTRACT
Morphology is one of the branches of linguistics; morphology is the subfield of linguistics that studies the internal structure of words and interrelationships among word. Part of morphology is the word formation those are coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, back formation, conversion, and acronyms. Furthermore, in morphology there is a process known as compounding, it is a process how to identify word specifically, by knowing word formation formed we can understand more because we can understand more the independent word which can formed and joined become a compound word and that is one of important the study of language. In analyzing any English text specifically we can use the theory that found in morphology, like compounding word, in this research the researcher analyze the English translation of one Surah which found in Holy Koran.
Moreover, it is necessary for us to know one of the sources of teaching in Islam namely Quran. Quran in Islam has role as the highest source that is used as basic source in formulating laws, and other regulations concerning the relation between the creature and his creator and creature with other creature. One of Surah in Quran is Surah Luqman, which consists of many advices of a man whose name is Luqman. It is so special because there is educational aspect which can be learned from this Surah, Luqman in delivering his advices is not by the way of saying in a harsh manner, but by the way of full of affection. In this Surah there are many term that we don’t know well and many compound word that the researcher feel need to be understand more specifically, that is why the researcher interested to analyze this English translation.
This research tends to be descriptive qualitative research. The data taken from the English translation of Surah Luqman and this research describes about compounding process which analyzes by researcher specifically in each data. And it all of the data used in the English translation of surah Luqman done by Taqqi-ud-Din and Muhsin Khan.
Moreover, there are nine categories of compounding word that can be found in this discussion, they are noun + noun, adjective + adjective, noun + adjective, adjective + noun, verb + noun, preposition+ noun, preposition + verb, preposition + adjective; they can be found in every part of Surah Luqman, after the researcher analyzed the English translation of Surah Luqman, the researcher found many of compound word, like seawater, hell- fire, trustworthy, gooddoers, wrongdoers, righteous deeds, good deeds, little while, seven seas, false deities, idle talks, wise book, humiliating torment, painful torment, mustard seeds, all of it have a correlation with the theory which the researcher done in this study.
At last, the writer suggests and has big expectation to the next researcher to be able to explore the compounding process deeply and more specifically in investigating data until it can be better and more perfect in study of compounding word, because there are many texts that we can found another type of compounding word.
