Syntactical structures analysis on wise word sentences in “The Wise Words Book” using Chinese box

ABSTRACT

In this research the researcher analyzes about the syntactical structures on wise word sentences in “The Wise Word Book” using Nelson Francis’ theory of Chinese box. With Chinese box we can know about the structure of the sentence.

In this research, the object analyzed is the wise word sentence in “The Wise Word Book” by Nur Aeni Iskandar published by Eska Media Jakarta, 12th edition.

The research problem to be discussed is “How are the syntactical structures on wise word sentences in ‘The Wise Words Book’ using Chinese Boxes?” and the objective of the study is to explain the syntactical structures used on wise word sentences in “The Wise Words Book” by using Chinese Boxes theory by W. Nelson Francis in his book entitled “The Structure of American English” (1958).

The researcher uses qualitative research method in doing this research since the obtaining data is the only sources of the research. Moreover, this is a descriptive research as the researcher represents the finding descriptively.

The results of this research show that there are complex syntactical structures in wise word sentences because in those sentences it is found that there are four syntactical structures namely structure of predication, structure of complementation, structure of coordination, and structure of modification.

In conclusion can be concluded that each sentence of wise word consists of four syntactical structures, therefore, the sentence are named by complex structure. And the most syntactical structure used is structure of modification.

Finally, based on the result of this research, the researcher hopes that it will become the significance data for the linguist society, especially those who are interested in the study of syntax. The result of this study can also be used as starting point for next researcher to do more research in syntax, especially in syntactical structures analysis. Moreover, this research is expected to improve the readers’ knowledge about sentence pattern, so that they will understand the content of wise word sentence not just the meaning and message.
