Abstract

Language is a system of oral or written expression and communication of ideas and emotions or the process, the style and the vocabulary of such system. Talking about language cannot be separated from its primarily function as a means of communication for the people and their society. In daily life, language is unseparable because language is the main instrument of communication. Language is the mirror of human reality. Human being uses language to express feelings, respond phenomena, and share an idea. Due to this fact, we realize that language has a big deal in understanding the message of communication.

This study is focused on analyzing euphemism in one section of Newsweek magazine namely World View section. Euphemism is a study on sociolinguistics concerned with polite meaning that is inferred from an utterance of sentence.

The researcher used descriptive qualitative research. The data are in the form of utterances or words from the World View section of Newsweek magazine published on 1st, 8th, 22nd and 29th of January 2007. In the data analysis, the researcher used some processes of analysis they are: (1) categorizing the data which are euphemism types, style and function. (2) analyzing the data then interpreting the data, and (3) the last process is making conclusion from the analysis.

The result of the study shows that in World View section, published on 1st, 8th, 22nd and 29th of January 2007, there are sixteen phrases related to euphemism, and from those phrases the researcher finds seven types of euphemism, they are: idiom, litotes, metaphor, hyperbole, technical jargon, metonym and acronym and abbreviation. Meanwhile, related to the style of euphemism, the researcher can classify them into formal, frozen and casual euphemism, and based on the function of euphemism, the researcher finds five functions, those are to inform, evaluate, moralize, convince and curse.

Based on those findings, the researcher suggests to the next researcher to make more wonderful and complete analysis on the same field because every literary work, especially written text has its own uniqueness.
