A study on diction used in essay of Time Magazine

ABSTRACT

The diction has a close relationship to essay. Choosing the right words determines the effective way in communicating the useful message or exact meaning to the reader. The writing style and the style of author, especially in essay, also can be controlled and analyzed by the choice of words used in their writing. Choosing the appropriate word ultimately determines the qualities of essay writing. Readers will consider the message writer shapes by word they write in any sentence. It can be concluded that choice of word (diction) is the basic component in arranging essay writing.

Based on that, the way of dictions is stated on types of word choice in meaning, and classes of word and also the kinds of figurative language analyzed. This study is focused on Essay in TIME magazine in June to December. To know more about diction, this study uses the theory was developed by McCrimmon, the types of meaning word, classes of word and the commonest figures of speech. The rest of these types will deal with each of qualities in choosing accurate and appropriate word.

It is concluded by using descriptive qualitative method, because the data are inform of words on sentences on Essay. Besides, the primary instrument for data collection is the researcher herself. Furthermore, the data were analyzed based on the number of paragraph of essay.

Data analysis revealed some findings covering the formulated research question, In accordance with choosing appropriate word based on the types of meaning of words and classes of words and also the kinds of figurative language. Those words are chosen to represent the writer’s view and attitude toward the certain cases.

In conclusion, based on the analysis, researcher found the types of diction based on meaning and classes of word and also the kinds of figurative language in essay of TIME magazine. The diction on essay are categorized and written informal situation, because there are consist of idiom, colloquialism, and also slang in small number.

Finally, it is suggested to analyze diction on the spoken words on certain situation in society by McCrimmon theory. There are some fields of linguistics that can be researched. Then, they will not investigate the type of words based on meaning, and classes but also in stylistic level.
