Abstract
ABSTRACT
The research discusses a way to form new words and new meanings in the translation of some surahs of the Holy Qur’an . The process is related to morphological term, namely affixation. Affixation happens if free morphemes are attached by one or more bound morphemes which can be in the beginning (prefix), within (infix), or in the end of root (suffix). Bound morphemes are divided again into derivational and inflectional. The researcher chose the English translation of the holy Qur’an by T.B Irving because Irving’s English translation of the Holy Qur’an represents American English style that is slightly different from British English one. He applied modern English that is relatively easier for current English users. Specifically, the study deals with the following questions:what are the kinds and function of affixes used in the translation of surah An-Naba’, An-Naziat, At-takwir, Al-Infithar and An-insyiqaq of the holy qur’an?. To answer the questions, the researcher objectively and sistematically identifies the words in the english translation of some surahs of the Holy Qur’an by T.B Irving that is used affixes.
This research use descriptive qualitative method. The researcher is the main instrumen and participant observation is employed in this research. The subject of this researchis is English translation of some surahs of the Holy Qur’an by T.B. Irving.
The result of this research shows the kinds of affixation in the english translation of some surahs of the Holy Qur’an are both inflectional and derivational affix. Affixes that categorized as inflectional are prefix pro- , re-, suffix –ing, -s, and –ed, and confix dis-ing, re-ion and re-er. Affixes that categorized as derivational are prefix in-, un- and dis-, suffix –ment, -ion, -ly, -ity, -ous, -en etc. and confixes re-ment, un-ed, en-ed ans etc. This research also describes the affixation process, namely combining affixation with the part of speech in order to form new word and new meaning. After knowing the kinds of affixes, the researcher also explains the function of those affixes.
From the presentation of the data it can be concluded that inflectional affixes are more dominant than derivational affixes. Some affixes has more than one meaning as suffix –ing can means material for or activity. The functions of affixes are to form verb, noun, adverb, and adjective. Those kinds of affixes, meanings and functions are supposed to give explanation and description about forming new word and new meaning in the translation of some surahs of the holy Qur’an.
