Abstract
ABSTRACT
Islam has warned human beings to keep and control speaking, because loosing control is able to cause bad effect of communication which is ending at complete breakdown in relationship, misunderstanding and conflict. Of course that is damaging the human being himself. We must manage speech to avoid the phenomenon of speech errors. Correction is one type of speech errors happens while a speaker stops speaking in the midsentence, may forget something to say or probably search for just the right word; or perhaps select words to correct their speech.
This research uses descriptive qualitative design that emphasizes on the specific case-speech errors by using psycholinguistic approaches to analyze the corrections in real speech used by the Model Class (MC) students of “Effective English Course Jombang” in weekly meeting program of MC XXXXVII 2008. Therefore this research focuses on observing the real speech to describe what correction types of students’ speech error in “Effective English Course of Jombang” are and also aimed to figure out how the students produce the corrections. The data are collected by observing, making field notes to note the context of corrections of students’ speech errors heard and also everything happens during the students delivering the speech, recording and transcribing them into written form. The data are analyzed by coding the words whenever the corrections types of students’ speech errors are found and categorized according to the criteria of corrections. Then the finding is discussed to formulate the conclusion.
This research finds that the students use corrections in their speech errors. Some types of corrections which are used by the students during delivering their speech are reference editing, nuance editing, mistake editing and claim editing. They produce corrections when they unintentionally stop in mid sentence, confusing situation or little bit nervous then made such kind of speech error that they think need to be revised. They directly use some phrases as a sign of corrections (that is, or rather, I mean, well) followed by the exact or correct word that the speaker meant to say.
Finally, by analyzing the corrections, the writer and the readers are expected to be able to identify how correction is produced so we are able to anticipate the speech error by preparing, re-reading the text, and avoiding any kind of nervousness. For the next researchers who will focus on psycholinguistics study especially on corrections, they are suggested to use this research as additional reference.
