ABSTRACT
This study investigates turn-taking strategies used in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie. The objectives of this study are to find out the kinds and the functions of conversational turn-taking strategies used in the movie and describe the most dominant kinds of conversational turn-taking strategies found.
This study uses descriptive qualitative approach and is categorized as conversation analysis because this study analyzes phenomena of talk in interaction. The data are collected from turn-taking strategies used by Harry Potter and other characters in courtroom, classroom, forest, Floo Network, café, office and house and are analyzed by using Sacks, Schegloff and Jefferson’s theory on turn-taking strategy. The data are transcribed by using Gail Jefferson’s transcription convention.
The result of this study shows that there are several conversational turn- taking strategies used in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie. They are; address term, adjacency pair, post completor, utterance in-completor, incompletion marker, overlap, repair techniques, tag question and natural next turn-taker. Adjacency pair is the most dominant kind of conversational turn-taking strategy used in the movie with thirty seven times used. Then the functions of conversational turn-taking strategies used in the movie are to take, hold and relinquish the turn. Address term is used by speakers to take, hold and relinquish the turn; adjacency pair is used to take and relinquish the turn; post completor is used to take and relinquish the turn; utterance in-completor is used to hold the turn; incompletion marker is used to hold the turn, overlap is used to take the turn; repair techniques is used to hold and take the turn; tag question is used to hold the turn; then natural next turn-taker is used to take the turn.
Since the findings of this study have not discussed about preference organization system on adjacency pair, finally the researcher suggests to next researchers to conduct further research and use more various settings in order to get more conversational turn-taking strategies.
