Abstract

ABSTRACT

Language is a means of communication. In producing a language we have to study about the sound. Study of sound is called Phonology. In Phonology there are phonemes. Phoneme is the smallest part of language. When we want to study a language, at the first time we have to know the kinds of phonemes in that language.

The researcher uses the title A Contrastive Study Between English and Endenese Phonemes to describe what is the difference between phonemes in English and Endenese. It will be useful for one who wants to study about Endenese or English phonemes.

This research uses a descriptive contrastive method. Descriptive Contrastive method is used to find the description of differences from the two languages. The result of this study shows that there are some different phonemes in English and Endenese. There are some phonemes we can find in English but not in Endenese, they are /v/, /θ/, /∫/ (š), / / (ž), /t∫/ (č), /d / (ĵ) and /j/ (y) and phonemes that found in Endenese but not in English they are /ŋ/ in the initial of words, /dz/. /gh/, /bh’/, /dh’/, /mb/,/nd/ , /ŋg/ and /’a/, /’i/, /’u/, /’e/, and /’o/ in the final of words.

Besides, the researcher also describes how to pronounce the phoneme well. Finally, by analyzing the contrastive phonemes in English and Endenese, the researcher expects that there will be any continuation in English and Endenese. Moreover, it is suggested that the next researchers conduct similar theme of the study but have more complete data and discussion.
