Abstract

ABSTRACT

Language is a means of communication, whether spoken or written language. By language, we can understand each other, what they say. It indicates that language is very urgent in human life. Through the language people can express their ideas, mind, feeling, desire and emotion to another and get information from others, response phenomena, share an idea and so forth. Due to this fact, we need good understanding to know the implicit meaning behind it. Therefore, the study of meaning is a must for developing the study of language.

Based on the background of the study, the researcher formulized the problems of the study into two research questions; what are the kinds of lexical meanings used in the rubric opinion of ABC News headlines about Iran nuclear issue? And what are the types of lexical cohesions in the rubric opinion of ABC News headlines about Iran nuclear issue?

To analyze the rubric opinion of ABC News headlines on Iran nuclear issue, the researcher used qualitative research design. The type of the design is descriptive qualitative because it is aimed at interpreting and understanding the meaning or words. The data are acquired from the rubric opinion of ABC News headlines on Iran nuclear issue in form of words.

There are five lexical meanings that are used in the rubric opinion of ABC News headlines on Iran nuclear issue that include denotation, connotation, synonym, antonym, and hyponym. The researcher found that a denotation is dominantly used in the rubric opinion of ABC News headlines on Iran nuclear issue. The types of lexical cohesion that are used in the rubric opinion of ABC News headlines on Iran nuclear issue are repetition and synonym.

Lastly, the researcher suggests the readers and the next researchers to investigate other kinds of such meaning as sentential and discoursal meaning so comprehensively that it enhances the study of kinds of meanings.
