A Semantic analysis on the English translation of Surah Al- Hadid

ABSTRACT

The present study investigates about semantics analysis especially on the lexical meanings and lexical cohesion in the English translation of Surah Al-Hadid by Taqiuddin and Muhsin Khan. According to the background, this research is conducted to answer the following question: what kinds of lexical meaning found in the English translation of Surah Al-Hadid by Taqiuddin and Muhsin Khan, and what kinds of lexical cohesion found in the English translation of Surah Al-Hadid by Taqiuddin and Muhsin Khan?

This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative methods, because it depends very much on description, and the data are taken in the form of words rather than numbers and statistics. The researcher used the English translation by Taqi-ud-Din and Muhsin Khan as the source of data. After reading and understanding the data obtained and getting information from the internet, he analyzed with some steps; first of all the researcher categorized the data into five categories in accordance with the division of data used as the data sources, the data each categories are presented, analyzed and concluded, after the data of the whole categories have already been presented, analyzed and concluded, the researcher made tentative conclusion and continued by making final conclusion.

The lexical meaning is to be interpreted as the meaning of lexemes depending on the meaning of sentences in which they occur. Lexical meaning concerns with the relationship between words and meaning. The lexical meaning involves denotation, connotation, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, homonymy, ambiguity and polysemy. Also included the lexical cohesion which is found the English translation of Surah Al-Hadid by Taqiuddin and Muhsin Khan. Lexical cohesion can be distinguished into two types they are reiteration and collocation.

Finally, the researcher suggests that this study could give contribution toward the researcher his self moreover for any ones who want to do the same field (literary works) in accordance with semantic analysis. Besides, he hopes any comments and suggestions because this study is far from perfection.
