The modern English aristocrats language politeness as exemplified by Ian Fleming’s James Bond in Casino Royale and Christopher Nolan’s Batman in Dark Night Movies

ABSTRACT

Movie reflects the real social life. It is influenced by the social and cultural values where the movie is being created. Considering the important of politeness strategies in a conversation, here the researcher wanted to find out the politeness strategies used by James Bond and Batman, two main characters in “Casino Royale and Dark Night Movies”.

This research was designed by using socio-pragmatics approach. The researcher studied a language phenomenon used by main actor. The descriptive qualitative method was used to conduct this research. This research describes and explains the politeness strategies used by Ian Fleming’s James Bond in Casino Royale and Christopher Nolan’s Batman in Dark Night Movies. In analyzing data, this study used the theory of Brown and Levinson of politeness strategy. There are steps that are used in analyzing the data. Firstly, select utterances from both main actors Batman and Daniel Craig. Secondly, determining the context of utterances. Third, classifying utterances into positive and negative strategies. Fourth, analyzing the politeness strategy in Casino Royale and Dark Night Movies. Fifth, describing the data concerning with positive and negative politeness found in the Casino Royale and Dark Night Movies. Finally, making conclusion as the result of the analysis data.

The researcher found out that both James Bond and Batman used a kind of strategy based on Brown and Levinson’s concept of politeness, they are positive politeness and negative politeness strategy.

This study can lead the future researcher to conduct research on politeness strategies in different cultural settings and mixed cultures. It is also hoped that the study on politeness strategies involves other languages, not just in English. Therefore it can be fruitful sources of knowledge in applying linguistic aspects in various languages.
