Abstract
ABSTRACT
Human beings need language in their interaction since it is the main tool of communication. As the development of the era, every language, including English, always develops all the time. The more complex condition, the more new words appear to symbolize it. The development of English language, especially in term of its vocabulary, can be caused by several factors. Those are internal factor as like making new words by combining more than one exist word or can be called as compounding, and also external factor as like taking certain word from other languages and adapt it as their language or well-known as borrowing.
The purpose of this research is to understand many types of English borrowing and compound words used in Akeelah and the Bee movie and also the process of making new words by having those two processes used in the movie.
This research uses descriptive qualitative method because it basically aims at describing the data in the form of words, utterances or sentences. By using this approach, the researcher tries to understand the phenomena of borrowing and compounding processes happened in the movie deeply. Furthermore, the data are analyzed descriptively to explain in detail the phenomena of borrowing and compound words based on morphological point of view.
The result of this research shows that as an international language, English often takes many words from other languages to refer to something since they do not have their own term to refer that thing. Here, the only type of borrowing used is importation which is divided into two kinds; foreign word and loanword. English word is classified as foreign word when it is taken from foreign language as it is, without any change in its spelling. While loanword is the word which is imported to English by considering English orthographic system. It means that English speaking people need to have a little change on the words’ spelling when it is not appropriate with their system since every language has their own system.
In addition, the types of compounding used in this research are nominal, adjectival, verbal and neoclassical compound. This kind of classification is done based on its part of speech. Besides, based on its spelling, the only type found is idiosyncratic compound since all of words are written in the single word, without any space or hyphen between them. In this case, the spelling of compound words formed by combining two foreign words are often different from those are formed by combining two English words.
