Abstract

ABSTRACT

Wajo people have many traditions which they keep up until now. These traditions are a heritage from their ancestors and have a big part in their daily life. One of their traditions is sompa which have something to do with mahar in Islamic wedding. Sompa is a part of wedding local tradition that Wajo people applied. The aims of this study are to describe how Sompa going to be accept by the Moslem people and refuse by other. Beside that, I want to know the continuity of this tradition, or I suppose to know how this kind of tradition can survived in the social change.

This study uses the anthropology paradigm, makes sociologies research as a type of research and chooses qualitative approach. However, for collecting data, researcher took from primary data by interviewing people whom have capabilities to give some understanding about the topic. And finally for analyzing, researcher used descriptive qualitative method.

Based on the results of this research, I conclude that the Bugineze people in Wajo accept this kind of tradition as a heritage of their ancestors. The similarity between tradition and Islamic teaching made easy for them to apply it in their life. Some of them refuse this kind of tradition based on their understanding that Islam teaches us to do not make some distinctions among the Moslems so they think that sompa against the Islam and they refuse it.

Based on the continuity and change in this kind of tradition, I found that there are several things that consist and some of them get change. The consist one just like a classification and terms, and the other one which get change are conversion, motivations, and the misuse of tradition by people who don’t have a good understandings about it.
