Abstract

Formally, the beginners learn English in the school. English course book becomes the media to help student in learning English. And by using this book, student can learn and read the book to get information and add their knowledge. Sentence is a set of words expressing a statement, a question or command. Usually sentence contains a subject and a verb. The sentence has four types (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentence) and four functions (declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, and imperative sentence). All of the type of English sentences has a big influence for English learners, especially who they are still in basic continuation (Junior High School). By reading text in the course book which they get from school will help them in learning English sentence while they are reading the text.

This study focuses on the type of English sentence of reading text of English course book for Junior High School Grade VII. It is intended to answer the following two research problems: (1) What are the types of the English sentences in reading texts book on “Get along with English” for Junior High School Grade VII. (2) What types of English sentence are mostly used in reading texts book on “ Get along with English” for Junior High School Grade VII. The objectives of the study are to identify the types of English sentences of reading text book on “Get along with English” for Junior High School Grade VII and also to identify the types of English sentence are mostly used in reading texts book on “Get along with English” for Junior High School Grade VII.

A descriptive qualitative method is used to conduct this study because this study describes and analyzes the type of sentence used in reading texts book on “Get along with English” for Junior High School Grade VII. It presents the data in the form of utterances. The research instrument is the researcher herself because in this research she spent great deal of time to collect and analyze the data in accordance with the types of sentence. The researcher uses some ways to collect to collect the data, namely; read and understand, select and classify, give number to code, and reduce data. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzes the data using some steps, namely; find out and categorize the data, analyze and interpreted the data, and conclude the result of analysis.

The results of this study show that the types of sentence used in reading text book are simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence, and compound complex sentence. There are thirty four of simple sentences are found. Then, twelve of compound sentences and nine of complex sentences. And the last, there is just one compound complex sentence is found.
