Abstract
ENGLISH:
This study discusses two interrelated issues: social interaction and social stratification. It analyzes social interactions among main characters, who have different social classes. These differences in turn determine the types of interactions among them. This study applies social stratification theory by Weber (1978) and social interaction theory by Soekanto (2013).
The study aims to find: (1) Social stratification background of the major characters in the short story Fifty Grand by Ernest Hemingway; (2) Forms of social interaction among the major characters in the short story Fifty Grand by Ernest Hemingway. This analysis was carried out through sociology of literature approach.
The researcher argued that the major characters can be classified into three different social classes, which are examined on the basis of the power, status, and wealth. Jerry and Soldier were members of the lower class, John Collins, Freedman, Steinfelt, and Morgan were the middle class, and Hogan and Walcott were the Upper class. Then, associative interactions occur when people of the lower class communicate with those of the upper class and among people of the same class. These kinds of communication tend to be more polite and submissive. Then, dissociative interactions can occur when those of the upper class communicate with the lower classes, in which the communication is more arbitrary and disrespectful.
INDONESIA:
