Analysis of taboo words on the Netflix series "Ginny and Georgia"

The purpose of this study is to describe the function and use of taboo language in someone who has a different social background in the Ginny and Georgia series. Ginny as a person with an excellent social background (middle-class); on the contrary, what happened to Georgia as someone belonging to the lower-class. This research using theory of Wardhaugh’s (2006). The researcher uses the descriptive qualitative method with document study type. The data used in this research are conversations by Ginny and Georgia that contain taboo words. The results of this study are described as follows. First, in collecting the data, the researcher found 93 taboo words used by Ginny and Georgia. According to Wardhaugh (2006) resulted in seven types of taboo words, 5data sex, 14 data death, 26 data excretion, 14 data bodily function, 24 data religious matter, 8 data one’s mother-in-law and 2 data certain game animal. Second, according to Wardhaugh (2006), this study resulted in three functions of taboo words used by Ginny and Georgia, including to draw attention to oneself, to show contempt, and to be provocative. Third, according to Press (2011) social and educational background influences the use of taboo words used by Ginny and Georgia, it resulted Ginny and Georgia have no difference in the use of taboo words, but in addition Georgia uses taboo words type certain game animal. Ginny mostly uses type religious matter and Georgia mostly uses type excretion, also use the function of to draw attention.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan fungsi dan penggunaan bahasa tabu pada seseorang yang memiliki latar belakang sosial yang berbeda dalam serial Ginny dan Georgia. Ginny sebagai orang dengan latar belakang sosial yang sangat baik (kelas menengah); sebaliknya, apa yang terjadi pada Georgia sebagai seseorang yang tergolong kelas bawah. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Wardhaugh (2006). Peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan tipe studi dokumen. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah percakapan Ginny dan Georgia yang mengandung kata-kata tabu. Hasil dalam penelitian ini diuraikan sebagai berikut. Pertama, dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menemukan sebanyak 93 kata tabu yang digunakan oleh Ginny dan Georgia. Menurut terori Wardhaugh (2006) menghasilkan tujuh jenis kata tabu, 5 data jenis kata tabu sex, 14 data mengenai death, 26 data excretion, 14 data bodily function, 24 data religious matter, 8 data one’s mother in law dan 2 data certain game to animal. Kedua, menurut Wardhaugh (2006), penelitian ini menghasilkan tiga fungsi kata tabu yang digunakan oleh Ginny dan Georgia, antara lain untuk menarik perhatian pada diri sendiri, untuk menunjukkan penghinaan, dan untuk provokatif. Ketiga, menurut teori Press (2011) latar belakang sosial dan pendidikan mempengaruhi penggunaan kata-kata tabu yang digunakan oleh Ginny dan Georgia. Ginny dan Georgia tidak memiliki perbedaan dalam penggunaan kata-kata tabu, selain itu Georgia menggunakan kata-kata tabu jenis certain game animal.
