Abstract
INDONESIA:
ENGLISH:
Corn stalk is one of agricultural waste that has a high cellulose content. Cellulose from corn stalk is modified to carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) which is potentially used as a composition for making alginate-CMC beads (BACMC). In this study, the synthesis of BACMC uses an ionic gelation method with variation concentration of BaCl2 crosslink 3%, 5%, and 10%. The synthesized BACMC was characterized using Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR), swelling test, digital penetrometer, optical microscope, Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersion X-ray (SEM-EDX), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The highest swelling and diameter values are shown at 5% of crosslink concentrations, this is 95.54% and 13.46%. BACMC FTIR shows the presence of Ba-COO- bonds at wave number 805 cm-1. The results of mechanical strength show that 10% BACMC has the highest hardness value, which is 15.39 Kgf. UV-Vis results show the maximum absorption were found at BACMC 3%. Then 5% BACMC SEM-EDX shows a rough and hollow surface, while the 10% BACMC surface is smooth and slightly hollow.
